Hand & Lock Contest
Flat Pattern for Designers
Apparel Bootcamp at FBI
TUESDAYS, April 13th - June 15th 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Are you having problems because you know much more about designing clothes than about running the business side of your own company?
Are you just getting started and need to determine if you know enough for your company to survive??
Are you "spinning your wheels" and going nowhere fast?
If so, this class is for you!
In the highly volatile, fast moving apparel industry, the reality is that the strong survive while the weak get eaten. As a small manufacturer you are faced with too little capital, too few sales, and too little time to do too many tasks. Like a tightrope walker, you're one mistake away from a disaster.
This no-holds barred course, The Apparel Boot Camp™, will help you to look at your company with a critical eye and see where you need to make changes in order to help the venture thrive. Through a combination of lectures, group discussions, reading assignments, and Q & A sessions, course participants will look at a different aspect of the business each week and will be provided with techniques, strategies, and information that they can use to become more profitable, produce a better product, and sell more units.
Among the topics that will be explored are:
Management (size, functions, expertise)Market Analysis (what to produce, for whom, at what price)Competition (product comparisons, distribution channels)Marketing Strategies (goals, tactics, timing, cost)Financial Projections (expenses, profit margins, sales volumes)
Instructor feedback about the participant's specific business (existing or proposed) will be made through the critiquing of written assignments submitted for review by the student. The instructor will also provide phone consultations to the participants, during the term of the course to discuss the course content, strategize about the student's venture, etc. If you're serious about your business and are willing to make changes in order to better compete in the marketplace, this is the course for you! Take charge of your business future.
Instructor: Robin Cornwall: a consultant and educator who has worked with hundreds of apparel manufacturers, teaching them strategies and techniques that make money, save time, and prevent mistakes.

FIDM: The Art of Motion Picture Costume Design
We will meet in front of the museum at 11am.
Hollywood 2010:
February 9, 2010 – April 17, 2010
They're ready for their close-up! Don't miss the 18th Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design exhibition, where you'll get an up close look at over 100 costumes from over two dozen of last year's movies, such as The Young Victoria, Star Trek, Julie & Julia, An Education, Nine, Broken Embraces, and The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. It's a rare opportunity to freeze the action and marvel at the imagination, artistry and intricacy of the costume designs. Also on display are the fashions from The Duchess, the Academy Award® winner for Best Costume Design in 2008.
The free exhibition is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Did You Know?
This year's exhibit also features two films with costume designs by FIDM Grads: Aliens in the Attic, designed by FIDM Grad Mona May, and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, designed by FIDM Grad Marlene Stewart.
Star Trek Costume Designer Michael Kaplan was not a fan of the original TV series and had not seen any of the previous movies. The Young Victoria Costume Designer Sandy Powell made Victoria's coronation robe completely from scratch, starting with the fabric. The intricate embroidery from the original robe was recreated by printing and hand painting.
