Western Costume Company in Los Angeles

Occasionally Threads takes a trip to visit Western Costume Company in Los Angeles, California, to visit their extensive vintage clothing collection. We find great inspiration for articles and can choose from their incredible collection for Threads’ back cover garments. Last week we left blizzarding and blustery Connecticut and flew to 70 degree weather in sunny Hollywood for one such visit.

Western Costume is a magic world of its own filled with friendly and gracious guardians who know how to help the people working in the many facets of the entertainment industry pull their acts together. Over the next weeks you’ll see more photos of this year’s adventure, but here are a few photos to get you interested.

Have you ever visited Western Costume? If not, it's worth a trip to see their exciting collection.
Behind the scenes you will find hat makers, dress makers, and here the leather shop.

Silk, Cotton & Rayon Price Increases

As you know, prices everywhere are going up, on all kinds of things.

As our silk customers already know, there have been big increases in silk fabrics and scarves recently due to problems with silkworms, rising costs of making silk, elimination of Chinese export tax credits and the revaluation of the Chinese currency (truth is, silk was priced unnaturally low and will never be that cheap again). Even so, Dharma continues to have the lowest prices on white silk in the USA on almost all of the silk items we stock.

However, this past year there are have been massive cotton crop failures in Pakistan (due to the severe flooding), China and other cotton growing regions with the result that cotton is trading at all time historical highs. This has resulted in very large cost increases from all suppliers of yarn, fabric and clothing. All manufacturers of cotton clothing are raising prices, and Rayon & silk costs have also gone up due to the resulting increased demand for alternatives to cotton.

We wanted you to have advance warning that significant price increases on cotton & rayon clothing and fabrics are coming soon. If you plan to use those items in the coming months you might consider buying now rather than later.

We are holding back from raising our prices as long as we can, but as new shipments arrive at the the higher costs, we too will have to raise our prices, in some cases substantially. We can absorb some of the increases, but not all. The high cotton prices are likely to eventually come down some, but at best, not before the end of the year.

We are very sorry to be the bearers of bad news, but please understand that we are doing everything we can to keep costs under control so we can continue to offer you the best prices available

If you do plan to stock up a bit, we'd like to help by offering to pay half of your ground shipping costs for on line orders over $75 during February.

We pay half the lowest price shipping during the month of February.

Use the discount code below during online checkout on orders over $75 and we'll pay half of the lowest cost shipping (Standard ground, 1st Class Mail / Priority Mail).

• US and Canadian Customers only
• Subtotal of order must be at least $75
• Shipping option chosen must be: Standard Ground, or 1st Class Mail / Priority Mail
• Offer good from Now through February 28th
