LACMA Exhibit - Fashioning Fashion

I went on a private tour of the LACMA exhibit on Fashioning Fashion. It is quite impressive for those that are interested in historical period pieces, body shape manipulation, detailed couture garments and lots of fussy frou-frou from 1700-1915. There is a section on undergarments which may be interesting for those in the corset class (a good supplement to the last lecture). The general exhibit is all things from wearable art class and an amazing way to see applications of these skills. For those students studying historical clothes, this is a must see.
Here is the link to the general exhibit:
http://www.lacma.org/art/ExhibFashioningFashion.aspx

The LACMA folks have done something really cool. A couple of pieces from the collection have been patterned and available online for free download!
http://www.lacma.org/art/ffpatterns.aspx

There is a lecture on Feb 12 on cultural influences on fashion. (I will be there!) Tickets are $30 for members, $35 for non-members, incl parking. The talk is before the museum opens so I suspect there is a private tour of the collection.
http://www.lacma.org/art/ExhibFashioningFashion.aspx

There are some very affordable ways to see the museum. Regular tix are $15 or $10 for students but I found some free deals! (Free is great!)

Certain Mondays are free, thank you Target! http://www.lacma.org/programs/FamilyDaysIntro.aspx#Target_Mondays
Bank of America has free admission for the first weekend of every month if you show your BofA card. (Only 1 tix per card) The site is annoying to navigate; you have to pick "CA" from the drop box and click on "Los Angeles" to see LACMA. http://museums.bankofamerica.com/
Discover the Arts has Buy 1 Get 1 Free at LACMA through April 30. Be sure to print the coupon and bring it. http://discoverlosangeles.com/thearts/

Autos and Fashion at Peterson Museum

AUTOMOTIVATED:
STREAMLINED FASHION AND AUTOMOBILES
Open July 24, 2010 through January 23, 2011

CAR: 1937 Delage D8-120 by Letourneur et Marchand. The Margie and Robert E. Petersen Collection. Photo courtesy of the Petersen Automotive Museum.
APPAREL: Bergdorf Goodman, Evening Dress, 1938, rayon charmeuse with plastic buckle. Phoenix Art Museum Collection. Photo by Ken Howie.

The sleek coachwork of the fashionably long Delage Aerosport was designed by Letourneur et Marchand of Paris and featured a rakishly dipped beltline and a fin on the trunk. In the same way that automobile designers experimented with using new shapes to create more fluid and graceful lines on cars, fashion designers were thinking of how to achieve the same result with fabric. Their objective was accomplished by cutting fabrics, such as that used for this Mille Oppenheim evening dress, on the bias so that they would better follow the contours of the body.

During the last 100 years more attention has been devoted to the designs of apparel and automobiles than to the designs of any other consumer goods. Two of the most personally revealing categories of objects ever conceived, cars and clothing have been shaped by an almost universal obsession with speed and movement, the twin fascinations of the twentieth century. Combined, they express not only one’s individual personality, but also their financial and social status and style-conscious individuals—especially in Southern California—have collectively embraced cars as fashion accessories that they ultimately came to regard as additional layers of clothing. Cars are now as essential to one’s self-expression as hats, gowns, and jewels.
Appearing late in the 19th century, the earliest series-produced automobiles were crude, dirty, noisy, unreliable, and difficult to start.

The Petersen Automotive Museum Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, governed by a Board of Directors. The Museum is located at 6060 Wilshire Boulevard (at Fairfax) in Los Angeles.

LACMA's "Fashioning Fashion" Exhibit

Now through March 6th
LACMA is hosting an amazing collection of European dress from 1700-1915 called "Fashioning Fashion". A MUST for every fashion student. Write a 1-page paper and attach a paper stub on your visit and get extra credit*. Ask your instructor for details.

Fashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail, 1700-1915 celebrates the museum's groundbreaking acquisition of a major collection of European men's, women's, and children's garments and accessories. The exhibition tells the story of fashion's aesthetic and technical development from the Age of Enlightenment to World War I. It examines sweeping changes in fashionable dress spanning a period of over two hundred years, and evolutions in luxurious textiles, exacting tailoring techniques, and lush trimmings.
Highlights include an eighteenth-century man's vest intricately embroidered with powerful symbolic messages relevant to the French Revolution; an evening mantle with silk embroidery, glass beads, and ostrich feathers designed by French couturier Émile Pingat
(active 1860-96); and spectacular three-piece suits and gowns worn at the royal courts of Europe.

VISIT THE LACMA WEBSITE for directions and details about the exhibition.
